Lesson 8: I didn't eat meat.
This lesson deals with past and present verb tenses. We have already studied the
present and future tense for positive and negative verbs. As a refresher: |
|
-ます
-ません |
positive
present/future negative present/future |
Examples:
パーティに いきます。 コーラを のみます。 にくを たべます。 |
I will go to the party. I drink cola. I eat meat. |
To change from present positive to past positive, take off the ます ending and replace it with ました. To change from a negative present to a negative past, use the ません ending and add でした to the end. |
|
Examples: こうえんに いきました。 |
I went to the park. |
おみずを のみました。 |
I drank water. |
にくを たべました。 |
I ate meat. |
ほん でした。 ほんでは ありません でした。 |
It
was a book. It wasn't a book. |
Note that again です is an exception. You cannot say じゃない でした. This rule will be explained later. Note also the word おみず. みず means water. The お is only added to be respectful. Many words often have this 'honorific' お added to the front. |
